The game of chess is not popular among maases mainly for two reasons: (1) Classical Chess (2 Hrs per player for 40 Moves) is a very slow game and (2) spectactors cannot participate in the game in any way like cheering, etc.
The first constraint shall be taken care of by holding more and more Rapid Chess tournaments. The 2nd can partly be taken care of by introducing Consultation Games wherein a pair of chess players plays against another pair and the pair is allowed to consult among themselves.
In short, chess is looked upon as a serious sport (In Western countries, it's not even regarded a sport!) and efforts shall be made to make it 'customer' or 'user' friendly.

I wish to point out that chess can be very well promoted in Chennai if the chess coaches are willing to spend some time for promoting it.

One of the easiest ways to promote the game is by promoting CONSULTATION CHESS in schools.

Recently I had been to some schools and conducted CONSULTATION CHESS awareness camp and had noted that nearly 2/3rd of the children present in the class (3rd standard) were not exposed to chess.

Most probably the chess coaching centres that function in our city are catering to those interested out of the 1/3rd who have exposure to chess due to parents' awareness.

Once a year, each chess coaching centre in Chennai can conduct such awareness camps on chess in a school thereby promoting the game. It is no use of lamenting that Viswanathan Anand is from Chennai and yet there is no awareness on the game. For the children to get into chess, Viswanathan Anand's achievement of Sasikiran's achieving alone is not enough. Chess should be taken to the children in Chennai and this is something that the chess coaches can very well do and make Chennai a place with competitive chess players.
