Gold for Bhupathi-Paes

Another tennis silver medal seemed in the offing for India at the Asian Games when Mahesh Bhupathi served at 0-40 5-6, the Indian duo having already lost the first set to the Ratiwatana twins. However, the Indian pair, buoyed by the crowds consisting mainly of Indian expats, saved six match points in the game and forced a tie-break. Bhupathi and Paes saved another match point in the tie-break, before going on to win the tie-break and subsequently the match 5-7 7-6 (8-7) 6-3.

The Bhupathi-Paes combination looked unlikely to play in the doubles after the spat following the loss to Chinese Taipei in men’s team event. However, the finals saw moments of the old days, at one point in the second set even the chest thumps were called upon to lift spirits. But it yet remains to be seen if both will play together for the Beijing Olympics, and whether their waning form and advancing age can overcome all challenges to win a gold for the country in 2008.

Paes will feature next in the mixed doubles event along with Sania Mirza later today.

  1. Very creditable. They should come back together permanantly in the interest of the country at least. There should be someone like a marriage counsellor for something like this.
