Barca beaten

South America continued their reign over the FIFA Club World Club, with Brazilian side Internacional beating Spanish giants and UEFA Champions League winners Barcelona 1-0 in the final. The competition, which was held in Japan, saw teams from all over the world competing for the top honours. Apart from Barcelona and Internacional, the other teams were Al Ahly from Egypt (who finished third), Club America from Mexico, Auckland City from New Zealand, and Korea’s Jeonbuk Motors representing the host continent.

Inter’s Luiz Adriano came off the bench and scored for the Brazilians eight minutes before the close of normal time. Barcelona were surely disappointed witht he result, having entered the tournament as favourites. Barca too had their chances, with Ronaldinho’s free-kick missing the mark by a whisker in the closing stages. Ronaldinho, seemingly back to form following his disappointing run for Brazil at the World Cup, was placed third in the race for ‘Player of the Tournament’, finishing behind Inter’s striker Iarley, with teammate Deco picking up the Ballon d’Or and the Toyota Award. Deco also was the suprise choice for ‘Player of the Final.’

The Brazilian side from Porto Alegre ensured the South American superiority over clubs from Europe, Sao Paulo having won it last year.
