Mumbai reach Ranji Trophy semis

Traditional favourites Mumbai joined Bengal, Baroda and Karnataka in the semis of the Ranji Trophy, beating Maharashtra by an innings and 154 runs in their last league match of the tournament. The team, led by Amol Muzumdar, had no points from their first three encounters but managed to win the remaining three with an additional bonus point to finish with 15 points from 6 matches. The disastrous start to the season had even prompted National chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar to request Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Wasim Jaffer to play the match against Maharashtra. Jaffer did feature in the match along with Ajit Agarkar.
